In 1964, Bruna and Gastone Sacco purchased the restaurant-pizzeria Il Torchio in Pallanza. Their winning intuition was introducing pizza al tegamino, a novelty for the region. The restaurant quickly became a local landmark.
In 1965, Marco Sacco was born. From an early age, he grew up surrounded by the aromas and sounds of the kitchen:
“I would run back and forth in the kitchen, and to calm me down, my mother Bruna would sit me in a corner with a little bowl to snack from while I listened to the sounds of a bustling kitchen.”
The road from il Torchio to Premosello Chiovenda, Marco’s birthplace, runs along the shore of Lake Mergozzo, where Piccolo Lago stands. One day, while traveling that path, Bruna exclaimed: “Gastone, that’s our spot.” And so began the adventure of the Sacco family at Piccolo Lago.
Marco is nine years old:
“I remember it like it was yesterday: Gastone lifted me up and placed me on an overturned water crate, allowing me to see his world. It was at that moment that I said, ‘Gastone, I will become a chef.’”
From the very beginning, Piccolo Lago stood out as a restaurant offering traditional, high-quality cuisine, with dishes that also featured lake fish. Among these was the famous Lavarello in carpione by Gastone. In addition to the restaurant, the business also included a hotel, and in the summer, the garden overlooking the lake transformed into a lively Lido.
As a teenager, Marco became passionate about the world of water, earning his lifeguard certification and windsurfing instructor qualifications, which led to his first venture: the sailing school.
In 1984, Gastone presented Marco with a choice: “Do you want to be a chef or an athlete?” Marco didn’t hesitate: “I will be a Michelin-starred chef!” With this decision, he left sailing behind to fully dedicate himself to cooking, beginning his training in the great French maisons.
In 1986, Jessica was born, while the family business continued until 1990, with Marco playing an increasingly central role in Piccolo Lago’s kitchen.
On July 30, 1991, Gastone passed away, leaving behind a legacy of passion and dedication.
A new chapter begins. Marco, together with his brother Carlo, continues to develop Piccolo Lago, steering it toward a new model of cuisine, driven by his ambition. In November 1991, Marco meets Raffaella Marchetti. She not only becomes his life partner but also a valuable collaborator, sharing many common passions, including travel, good food, and the curiosity to discover and learn. In 1996, Simone is born. “On February 7th, the very day Piccolo Lago reopened after the winter break, with a brand new kitchen,” Marco recalls.
Marco, Raffaella (known as Lella to friends), and Carlo realize the potential of Piccolo Lago. With this approach, the new millennium begins.
In the early 2000s, Piccolo Lago undergoes a structural expansion, increasing the restaurant’s capacity to its current size. The terraces are created, and the philosophical concept that links art, cuisine, and the territory begins to take shape.
In 2004, Piccolo Lago receives its first Michelin star. Just three years later, in 2007, it earns a second star. Meanwhile, Jessica and Simone grow up, with Jessica gaining her first international experiences after finishing hospitality school, and Simone roaming around the restaurant.
2008 marks the year of the great kitchen project. It transforms into its current state. These are years of change, as the restaurant evolves from a family business to a company, with new projects and consultancy opportunities. Marco establishes his identity as a freshwater chef, later founding Gente di Lago e di Fiume, a cultural association promoting inland waters. Lella becomes the company’s administrator, Jessica specializes in event and wedding planning, and Simone is about to finish his studies.
The Sacco Group begins to take shape as we know it today. In 2019, the management of Piano35, a restaurant and lounge bar in Turin, is added, earning a Michelin star in 2020.
Simone, back from London, joins the company. In 2022, another opportunity arises: managing the hotel-restaurant Il Verbano on the Island of the Fishermen. The team grows, with new members joining the company, and Marco and Lella lead the orchestra of the three locations.
